Munich. At the proving ground it immediately left the competition standing and is also right up front when it comes to public popularity. During its first year, the new BMW 5 Seriesgot off to a perfect startand is continuing unabatedly with its success story in 2011.

Commanding victories in comparison tests carried out by well-known specialised media, best marks in the analyses performed by independent experts with regard to design, safety and value stability as well as an unparalleled flood of accolades in the latest reader surveys at home and abroad characterise the impressive start-up phase, which began with the market launch of the BMW 5 Series Sedan in March 2010. The outstanding desirability and popularity of the BMW 5 Series is also reflected in the sales figures. Demand was additionally boosted with the launch of the new BMW 5 Series Touring. Since October 2010, the BMW 5 Series has been global market leader in the premium segment of the upper midrange class. During the course of 2010, a total of 211,968 vehicles of the BMW 5 Series were sold worldwide, this representing an increase of 22.6 percent over the previous year. In the spring of 2011, diversity of the BMW 5 Series model range will be extended yet again. Intelligent four-wheel drive technology BMW xDrive can now be combined with three engine variants featured in the BMW 5 Series Sedan and it will shortly be introduced in the BMW 5 Series Touring. The new models BMW 535i xDrive, BMW 530d xDrive and BMW 530d xDrive Touring are fitted as standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission including Auto Start Stop function.
The BMW 5 Series is �Germany�s Favourite Car�, has gained �Car of the Year� awards from the UK, Bulgaria, Mexico, Thailand and New Zealand, completed both the US NCAP and the Euro NCAP crash test as the safest vehicle in its class and received, among other awards, numerous prizes for design. No other model caused such a sensation on international automotive markets in 2010 as the new BMW 5 Series. On the basis of the car�s qualities and enormous popularity, market observers are already predicting that it will retain a high level of value stability, for which reason the new BMW 5 Series is listed as �Value Champion 2011� in the rankings published by the trade magazine �Auto Bild�.

BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo Design and style

The 5 GT has dimensions mimicking in length the 7 Series, a height and trunk space slightly more than the 5 Series wagon, and headroom comparable to the BMW X5.[8] It also features design cues from the BMW CS Concept, as well as new designs indicative of upcoming models.

The vehicle has a coupe-like roofline, elevated seating, and a "bi-modal" trunk which operates like a sedan or a traditional SUV. For the first time on a 4-door BMW, the 5 GT features frameless doors. The headlights contain the new LED Corona rings slanted at an angle and extending into the fenders.

BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo Concept

BMW has unveiled the 5 Series Gran Turismo concept, inventing categories that don't yet exist with a vehicle that isn't quite a sedan, wagon, crossover or SUV. Instead, the Bavarian automaker refers to its new vehicle as a Progressive Activity Sedan, which apparently means that it's a fastback wagon that sits a bit higher off the ground than normal sedans. If you love the shape of the X6 but don't need the ground clearance, you'll probably find little to complain about from the 5 Series GT.

The GT is a big car - larger than the 5-Series in every dimension. It measures 4.998 mm (197-inches) in length 1.901 mm (74.8-inches) in width and 1.559 mm (61.4-inches) in height with a limo-like 3.070 mm (120.9-inches) wheelbase. BMW 5-series Gran Turismo Concept PAS Open the pillarless doors and you'll find a four-seat layout and a panorama glass roof with BMW promising that the GT offers the passengers at the rear the same legroom as in the BMW 7 Series and virtually the same headroom as in the X5 SUV.

While we're not quite sure we're on board with the new bodystyle, one feature we do admire is the two-piece, double-jointed tailgate. It's a clever take on the classic problem of how to access the rear hatch in tight quarters. Once open, that space can hold a cavernous 58 cubic feet of stuff with the rear seats folded down. Regardless of the total amount of room, we've got to wonder if that oddly shaped opening will severely limit what can fit in the boot.

BMW did not release any mechanical details on the 5-Series GT that will make its first public appearance at the forthcoming Geneva Motor Show in early March.
