Mazda announces the SKYACTIV-G 1.3 direct-injection gasoline engine

As part of a strategy to cut fuel economy by 30% after five years, Mazda has detailed a brand new engine 1.3-liter gasoline direct injection that will debut in the facelifted Mazda2 (known as Domio in certain markets). The unit was recently introduced at the Pacifico Yokohama convention center near Tokyo, Japan. It features dual sequential valve timing and an ultra high compression ratio. It was actually in 2010 that the unit was revealed but Mazda only released the complete details of this model a few weeks before it goes on sale in Japan.

The SKYACTIV G 1.3 is combined with Mazdas i-stop idling stop system. It features a record high compression ratio of 14.0:1 and has piston cavities that are meant to support ideal combustion and multi hole injectors for precise fuel injection.

Mazda has applied for over 130 patents related to the SKYACTIV G 1.3 engine, which has an output of 82 hp at 5,400 rpm (62 kW) and 112 Nm (83 LB-FT) of torque at 4,000 rpm. However, Mazda claims that the Domio will receive about 70 mpg in Japans domestic market testing. The Domios four-cylinder engine is coupled to a CVT that will make the most of the latest technologies. [via - 4wheelsnews]
