Rumor: Mazda RX-9 will carry Toyota hybrid technology

The upcoming Mazda RX-9 is rumored to be a highly complex sports car that will feature a hybrid version of the Renesis engine that was junked along with the RX-8. Motor Trend also claims in its latest report that Mazda will borrow Toyotas hybrid tech to reach its goals. This story is supported by the 2011 agreement between the two companies. Back then, it was revealed that the first car to use the borrowed technology would be released in 2013.

Motor Trend said that Mazda is actually planning a sports coupe that uses a conventional arrangement instead of getting the reverse-opening rear doors.

This model will share the platform with the MX-5. This means that it will be the first rear-wheel drive hybrid sportscar for the mass market ever offered worldwide.

A source said that the next rotary car would have less emissions and higher fuel economy and will also be smaller and lighter. He added that it will debut in late 2013. [via - 4wheelsnews]
