SPIED: Toyota FT-86 Sports Coupe with New Wing Scooped Alongside the Supra

Now that the international auto show circus has shifted into neutral gear for the summer, Toyota is back at the Nurburgring trying out its upcoming FT-86 rear-wheel drive sports coupe, which is been co-developed with Subaru. The prototype seen in these fresh spy spots appears to be wearing a production bodywork while also featuring a host of aero fittings, the most prominent of which is the jumbo-size rear wing that brings to mind the last Supra.
Talking about the Toyota brands last sports coupe with a rear-wheel drive layout, as you can see for yourself in our photo gallery, a mid-90s example of the Supra was spotted traveling alongside the FT-86 at the Nurburgring. Observing the two cars together, it is not hard to see the resemblance.

Toyota Confirms 2.0-liter Boxer Engine, Six-Speed Gearboxes and LSD for 2012 FT-86

In keeping enthusiasts on their toes, Toyotas European division came out with a new release today on its upcoming FT-86 sports coupe. The Japanese automaker confirmed that the production version will go on sale in 2012 with power coming from by Subaru's new 2.0-liter 4-cylinder boxer engine fitted with Toyota's D-4S technology. The latter consists of direct injection combined with port injection.

We still dont get any output numbers although Toyota says the D4-S technology results in increased horsepower and torque without sacrificing fuel consumption and environmental performance. Subaru's latest 2.0-liter horizontally opposed gasoline engine, which is offered on the all-new Impreza, develops 148 horsepower and 145 lb-ft (197 Nm) of torque, but in the case of the FT-86, output is expected to increase significantly.

Poll: Whats Your Favourite Toyota FT-86 Concept?

Toyotas FT-86 sports coupe has to be one of the most hotly anticipated cars of the last ten years. A sporty, lightweight, front-engined and rear-wheel-drive spiritual successor to the legendary AE86, brought to you by the same company that built the Celica, MR2 and Supra? Yes, please!

So far, weve had three iterations of the AE86 Nouveau. First, theres the original, scene stealing Toyota FT-86 Concept from the2009 Tokyo Motor Show. Then theres the much derided FT-86 II Concept from Geneva 2011. And lastly, theres the Ferrari-emulating Scion FR-S that took the 2011 New York Auto Show by storm.

Despite the fact that the concept car, Toyota FT-86, which was introduced in October last year, still far from production, the model underwent its first operational development of the Toyota engineers and their partners from the firm GAZOO, "who have eaten more than one dog" to establish racing cars.

While Toyota and GAZOO not disclose the technical parameters of their joint project, but reporters found out that under the hood of the model is the upgraded 2-liter turbocharged engine company Subaru. Its capacity can exceed 300 hp, which will allow concept, if it goes into mass production, to compete with many European sports car.

Toyota FT-86 Concept Previewed

The Toyobaru is finally shown in the flesh metal and though thats not what its called, it still is a collaboration between Toyota and Subaru. This here people, are the official photos of the FT-86, a near production model of the co-developed rear-wheel-drive coupe that will make its world debut at the Tokyo Motor Show later this month. The production version of this 2+2 seater sports coupe, whose conceptual name harks back to the popular RWD Corolla AE86 or better known as Hachiroku, is due to go on sale towards the end of 2011.

The FT-86 Concept is neither an electric vehicle nor a hybrid vehicle, but is a sports model with a gasoline engine developed to convey the essential appeal of automobiles in a new era. It is a must-see concept car that expresses TMCs desire to once again create a Toyota sports car, the Japanese automaker said in a release published on its official site.

The FT-86 is powered by a front-mounted, 2-liter four-cylinder boxer engine sourced from Subaru that drives the rear wheels. Official details are still scarce but our source says that Toyota opted to equip the concept model with a naturally-aspirated version of Subarus 2-liter flat four that produces 150hp in the Impreza. But it is very likely that Toyota has tweaked the engine to crank out a few more horses to boost output closer to the 200 mark.

Its worth noting that in Japan, Subaru also offers a 2.0-liter turbocharged boxer with 250HP that powers the Impreza S-GT that we all know as the WRX in most markets.

Considering details are scarce, we can only guess at which powertrains will be available on the production version of the FT-86. Two logical choices will be either Subarus 2-liter and 2.5-liter four-cylinder boxer engines (depending on the market) in both naturally aspirated and turbocharged forms.

As for the looks of the car, our source suggests that the design of the car wont change much when it reaches production in 2011. But the same cant be said of the interior though as it still is too conceptual for production.
