BMW 6 Series

BMW 6 SERIES

BMW 6 SERIES

BMW has long offered fine driving cars for every luxury budget, though most have been high on door count. The BMW 6 Series coupe and convertible are for those seeking Bimmer performance two-door style in a high-end package that's noticeably more extravagant than the company's entry-level offerings. In many ways, one can consider the most recent BMW 6 Series to be a two-door variant of the company's 5 Series sedan.

The singular (non-M) BMW 6 Series model, the 650i, inherited most of the contemporaneous 550i's running gear, including in  BMW 6 Series 4.8-liter V8. The resulting 360 horsepower means speed comes quite naturally to the BMW 6 Series. In fact, its agile handling, swift braking and slick pair of transmissions make it a great performer all around, while a composed ride quality and supportive seats keep comfort levels high.
The BMW 6 Series coupe and convertible are some of the more interesting luxury two-doors on the market. Furthermore, a competitive pricing strategy on BMW's part makes them a better value than many other European-brand two-doors. As an imperfect but unexpectedly affordable coupe or convertible, the BMW 6 Series is hard to ignore.

BMW 6 SERIES

Buyers should note that there is no BMW 6 Series for 2011, but it will be back for the 2012 model year once again in coupe and convertible form. The most recent BMW 6 Series coupe and convertible was produced from 2004-'10. Originally, it came equipped with a 4.4-liter V8 rated at 325 hp and 330 pound-feet of torque and was known as the 645Ci. For 2006, the BMW 6 Series name changed to 650i (minus the "C") and its engine was updated to a 4.8-liter V8 that produced 360 hp and 360 lb-ft of torque. Driving characteristics between the 645Ci and 650i are very similar: The smaller V8 shared the 4.8-liter's athletic character but had a slightly less vigorous power band. If you find a well-kept 645Ci on the used market, you won't find it lacking from a performance standpoint.
Prior to 2008, BMW 6 Series have six-speed transmissions available: a traditional manual, a traditional automatic and BMW's SMG, which used an electronically controlled clutch to provide both the responsiveness of a manual and the forget-about-it friendliness of an automatic. Sounds good, but in reality, we'd steer clear of this transmission, as its herky-jerky performance makes everyday driving a pain in the neck. Most BMW 6 Series from this time were equipped with the traditional automatic, but it didn't become standard until 2010. The manual became an option at that point.

BMW 6 SERIES

In reviews of this BMW 6 Series, we've found that the ride was supple and quiet, the brakes were powerful, and despite nearly 2 tons of weight, handling limits remained high thanks to aggressive tires and a well-balanced rear-drive chassis. However, the BMW 6 Series experience largely depended on how you chose to equip the car. Adding the Sport Package firmed up the ride and increased cornering grip via a set of 19-inch wheels and tires, while the variable-ratio active steering quickened low-speed turning response.
As with any luxury touring coupe or convertible, the specific mission of this BMW 6 Series was to cover lots of road in a hurry while making its occupants look and feel great -- the front ones, anyway. Unfortunately, the BMW 6 Series offered precious little of the rear seat space found in its contemporary 5 Series sedan counterpart despite similar midsize dimensions. The BMW 6 Series swoopier body lines were the reason for this, but even with the heightened focus on appearances, neither the 650i coupe nor the convertible could be considered the pinnacle of style.
Buyers of a used BMW 6 Series should note that beyond the powertrain changes, in-car electronics were also upgraded over the years. Early models feature older versions of BMW's iDrive system, which was still in its nascent stages and quite frustrating to use. Gradual improvements were made, but it wasn't until 2010 that the system became fully worthwhile.

Official Patent Designs of BMWs New Four-Door Sports Coupe

Last April, from the sidelines of the 2010 Beijing Auto Show, BMW displayed a thinly disguised concept model of a sporty-looking sedan model named the Gran Coup. Now, it looks like that the Bavarian automaker is preparing for the presentation of the final production model as the company has just filed a patent for the designs of its so-called four-door sports coupe.
The images outline the shape and details of the production version that will most likely go on sale in early 2012. By comparing the drawings of the production car with the photos of the concept model, we see that BMW has made some subtle styling changes to the front with the redesigned bumper featuring a center grille on the lower part as well as to the rear, which sports re-positioned and re-sized reflectors and different tail pipes.

Hartge Gives the 2012 BMW 6

The German tuning industry is pushing full steam ahead with beefing up BMWs new 6-Series sports car. We have already shown you the offerings from Prior Design, Hamann Motorsports and AC Schnitzer, but now its time for another traditional BMW tuner to release its goods for the F12 6-Series Convertible.
Hartges first take on the Bavarian model is somewhat restrained comprising of some mild styling and chassis upgrades. On the outside, the tuning firm offers its own emblems, new dual tail pipes on each corner of the bumper and a variety of alloy wheel designs in sized 19- and 20-inches shod in beefier performance tires.

Car Spotting: New BMW 6-Series Coupe

Carscoop reader Florian G. from Germany emailed us these photos of a 2012 BMW 6-Series Coupe that he spotted parked on a road in Munich. While not a scoop in the traditional sense given the introduction of the new BMW 6-Series Coupe at last months Shanghai Auto Show in China, it is an interesting find nonetheless.
The only thing were not sure of is what the iCenter sticker below the vents of the front fenders means (that is, if it means anything). For the record, weve encountered the same logo on a few recent BMW prototypes. Follow the break for more pictures.

U Spy: Is this the New Alpina B6 Based on the 2012 BMW 6-Series Coupe?

Back in April, BMW lifted the covers off its spanking new 2012 6-Series Coupe at the Shanghai Auto Show in China. Having already shown the Convertible version, the only model left to complete the series is the presentation of the M6 in both coupe and open top forms. Well, at least in absolute terms, as weve yet to hear from BMWs longtime tuner, Alpina, which is considered a manufacturer in its own right.
And thats where Carscoop reader Michael from Germany steps in. Michael spotted this partially camouflaged 2012 BMW 6-Series Coupe parked somewhere in Munich. And while the lack of any aero parts such as the typical M-style front bumper with larger air vents minimize the possibility of it being the new M6, there are two elements that make us believe it could be the upcoming Alpina B6.

Lumma Design (Over)does the E64 BMW 6-Series Convertible

Even though the new F12 BMW 6-series Convertible has already landed on the market, Lumma Design has set its eyes on the previous generation of the Bavarian firms flagship cabriolet with the release of a new cosmetics only package.
Known for its brazen styling choices when it comes to dressing up cars, the German tuning houses latest proposal is no exception to the rule. On the outside, the team over at Lumma Design developed an a full aerodynamic kit that includes M-style front bumper, more prominent side skirts and a new rear bumper with side openings and a diffuser that houses quad tail pipes. The deal is sealed with a carbon fiber rear wing, and carbon fiber trim in a checkerboard design on the double kidney grille, the exterior mirrors and the rear diffuser.

BMW 6-Series roomier, less controversial 2011

BMWs followup to the dramatic 6-Series wont bring anything shocking to the table, but it should address concerns with the existing model and increase the large coupes competitiveness, according to a new report by Germanys AutoBild.
While the current 6-Series ? introduced in 2004 ? is arguably one of BMWs most aggressive and controversial designs, its successor wont do anything to push the envelope further. Instead, it will serve to move the 6er further toward grand tourer territory.
Longer than todays model, the 2011 6-Series will offer more legroom for rear passengers. At the same time, it will get a sportier cockpit with a more driver oriented console layout.
As signaled by BMWs new CS Consept, the automaker will be abandoning its awkward trunk design features on the 5-,6-, and 7-Series in favor of a more streamlined design.
Three engines options will give customers a choice between 306, 408, and 507 horsepower, the report claims. The 306 hp model will make use of BMWs new twin-turbo inline-six found in the 335i. Its unlikely the 635i will make it to U.S. shores, since Germany luxury makers generally dont offer entry-level engines in premium cars in America.
The 650is successor will climb in output to 408 horsepower ? up from 360 horsepower in the current model, which itself was a significant jump from the 645is 325 horsepower. The M6 is expected to retain BMWs 5.0-liter V10, with output of at least 507 horsepower.
The convertible version is expected to make use of a folding metal roof, like the new 3-Series convertible. Front overhang on both models will decrease by an inch and a half, despite increased pedestrian safety requirements. Wheelbase will grow three inches.
A previous Autobild report suggested BMW would also offer a four-door variant of the next-gen 6-Series codenamed F14, but it now appears rivaling the Mercedes CLS will be the job of the CS-based 8-Series.
